Bernie Spain Gardens are a hidden oasis at the heart of the South Bank owned, managed and maintained by Coin Street. Since 1988, Bernie Spain Gardens have been serving the local community offering a quiet place for local residents, workers and millions of visitors to enjoy.
In 2018 West 8 Landscape Architects won a competition to improve the park, their design included new HVM solid granite boundary walls to define the park’s frame and pedestrian flow – the walls doubling as seating for the park. New trees and pollinator plant beds to attract diverse wildlife, new lawns and seating throughout the Gardens amd a new pavilion with facilities for gardeners and volunteers
Implementation began during the spring of 2021 and we were delighted to be awared the contract to supply all of the granite boundary walls for Phase One, with Phase Two due to start mid 2023.
Each of the wall sections were constructed of solid White Sevilla Granite, weighing in at 2.5 Tonnes each. A total of 74 wall sections with a ‘flame textured’ finish were specially made and shipped by sea from Spain via Porto in Portugal, to keep carbon emissions from transportation to a minimum.
Stainless steel vertical pins secure each block to its foundation, and 60mm diameter stainless steel lateral dowels link each block to the next in a long secure chain around the park.
